Over the centuries the city was inhabited by Native Americans, a trade center for oil, lumber yard and was a popular resort town. In 1784 Redondo Beach was occupied by Native Americans. The land became San Pedro when the California Government granted land to Juan Jose Dominguez family in 1784. 

Hotel Redondo opened in 1890. The hotel had its 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, beautiful landscaping and 225 luxury rooms, each room was touched by the oceans sunlight at some time of the day. If the hotels price was too expensive one was able to rent a tent at Tent City nearby. Visitors were charged $3 per week or $10 per month for a tent. In 1925 Hotel Redondo closed and was sold for scarp lumber. 


Their were several site seeing that lured visitors to Redondo Beach. One was Moonstone Beach which lied between Diamond Street and Hermosa Beach city line. Another site was Carnation Gardens, located of Ruby and Sapphire Street east of Catalina Ave and offered 12 acres of sweet smelling flowers that always bloomed. Other attractions was the pier, sport fishing, amusement games, rides and the largest salt water plunge. 

In the 2000 census, there were 63,261 people in the city, 28,566 households, and 15,254 families. The racial makeup of the city was 78.62% White, 2.52% African American, 0.4% Native American, 9.10% Asian, 0.35% Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.47% of the population. 

There were 28,566 households out of which 23.3% had children under the age of 18, 40.6% were married couples, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband and 46.6% were non-families, 33.1% of all households were individuals and 5.9% had some living alone who was 65 years or older. 

According to a 2006 estimate, the median income for a household was $82,744 and the median income for a family was $103,463. Males had a median income of $56,796 and females median income $45,204. The per capita income for the city was $38,305. 4.0% of families and 5.9% of the population were below property line, including 6.2% under the age of 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 year or older.
