- Create a complete inventory of what you will be moving to your new place. - Don't forget to photograph or videotape any valuable belongings. - It's also wise to make a note of the serial numbers on your electronic equipment. - Don't be afraid to ask for help: If you never moved before and you are not really sure what you need or what the move is going to be like. Get someone who has moved before and ask for some help.
The Essentials
Make a box of essentials that will be packed last & opened first. This box should include:
- Tools; All purpose shears, Batteries, Extensions Cords, Flashlight, Hammer, Light Bulbs, Masking tape, Nail Assortment, Screwdriver, Pliers/ Cutters, Tape measure and Utility Knife. - Bathroom items; Hand towels, Facial tissue, Hand soap, Tooth brush, Tooth Paste, Toilet paper, shampoo and body soap. - Kitchen items; Garbage bags, Kitchen sponges, Dish detergent, Paper Towels, Pens, Paper Cups, Paper Plates, Plastic Utensils and Kitchen Table
Packing Supplies
- Sturdy Boxes, get more boxes than you think you will need - Bubble wrap & Packing peanuts - Lots of packing tape - Tools to open up boxes - Lots of permanent markers - Old Blankets or sheets for the corners of furniture.
Packing Tips: Boxes
- Pack one room at a time, labeling each box & designation. Also label if its breakable. - Pack boxes tightly to prevent shifting during the move. Fill empty spaces with crush newspaper. - Pack plates on end vertically. - Place heavier items is small boxes & lighter items in larger boxes.
Kitchen Items
Breakables: - Use bubble wrap or newspaper - Bubble wrap between each bowl or plate - Protect inside of top bowl with crumbled paper or newsprint
Non-breakables: - Be sure to wrap everthing before placing in the box
Lawn Equipment
Gas powered: - Drain all harmful liquids; oil & gas from lawn mowers - Put covers on chain saws, & other sharp tools - Clearly mark attachments
Tools: - Secure all tools that are the same length together - Keep small tools in the toolbox
Items you shouldn't pack
If you are using a moving company, some household items cannot be included in your move because they are hazardous materials. Example: - Flammables; paint, varnish, thinners, gasoline & oil - Cleaning fluids & detergents
Tricky Things
- Small mirrors should be carefully wrapped & packed in boxes. Cardboard should be used to cover large paintings artwork or large mirrors. - Outdoor furniture may be too big or heavy to move in one piece, you may need to take it apart. Place nuts & bolds in a plastic bag & attach it to the furniture.
