Hermosa Beach was part of the ten-mile ocean front of Rancho Sausal Redondo. In the early years Hermosa was one of the rolling hills covered with fields of grain. In different seasons of the year herds of sheep grazed the land.

Long time residents claim that the climate was pleasant, being warner and having less fog and sand was always blowing from the sand dunes. Early pioneers named the city Hermosa meaning "Beautiful".

In 1904 the pier was built. This original pier was constructed entirely of wood to the pilings and extended 500 feet into the ocean. In 1913 the pier was partly washed away and then torn down. A new one was built to replace the original pier. A newer pier was built from concrete and one thousand feet long and paved with asphalt.
